The Roughs are the harsh outlands far beyond civilisation and Waxilium Ladrian is one of the few that maintain what little law there is. With his uncle's unexpected death he is summoned back to Elendel to assume his duties as the head of his house. Forced to acclimatise to a different lifestyle and settle down with an arranged marriage to the daughter of Lord Harms, Steris, Wax realises that it is simply not in his nature to put down his guns. Then an old friend appears out of the past with a proposition.
When Wax returned to the city he had left his old partner Wayne in charge of the town Weathering out in the roughs. It turns out that Weathering is now on the trail of an infamous gang of thieves known as the Vanishers. Wax's instincts have not left with the arrival of his new life in the city, and he itches to investigate the recent thefts.
In an attempt to put on appearances Wax and Steris attend the wedding reception hosted by the Yomens. There Steris' cousin Marasai recognises the disguised Wayne only moments before the reception is attacked by the infamous Vanishers themselves. Steris is taken hostage and though the gang also attempts to kidnap Marasai the ensuing gunfight started by Wax and Wayne allows her to break free and assist in the battle. By some miracle the three manage to overcome the remaining Vanishers without injuring any of the bystanders. In the aftermath Wax argues with the apparently ineffective Constable Captive Brettin while Wayne misappropriates an aluminium gun from the evidence pile, later giving it to Wax.
Wayne takes a tea brewed by Wax’s butler when he collapses, declaring the tea poisoned. The butler, Tillaume, attempts to finish the job with a pistol but in the ensuing struggle Wax gains the upper hand. As a last resort Tillaume activates a bomb and to escape the explosion Wax feruchemically increases his weight to break through the floor to the floor below, he and Marasai escape unharmed but Wayne is badly burnt by the explosion and his goldmind is already drained by his recovery from the poison.
After surviving the attempt on their lives the three leave the mansion and head towards the Vanishers hideout, sneaking in, they find clues to the nature of their operation and to who might be leading them, Miles Dagouter, a powerful gold compounder better known by his nickname ‘Hundredlives’. While this is happening Miles is forced to assure his mysterious benefactor that Wax, who is already posing a problem for the Vanishers, will be dealt with. Sometime later, having returned to the Outer Estates Wax investigates one of the scenes of the Vanishers many thefts. Meanwhile Wayne almost interrogates Marasi about her affections for Wax.
On their return to the city Miles makes his move, attacking Wax on the train, he nearly overpowers him but Wax manages to push Miles off the train. The trio are left needing somewhere to stay out of harms way and Ranette receives an unexpected visit which she reacts to somewhat aggressively, Wayne manages to bribe their way into her good books, and out of the way of her shotgun by givng her Wax’s aluminium gun.
In return for the aluminium handgun Ranette gives Wax a set of Hazekiller rounds, designed specifically to combat Allomancers, and a prototype gun that she has named Vindicator after the Ascendant Warrior of legend. Using Wayne and Marasi to keep them supplied, Wax works out the next target that the Vanishers will strike at. The Tekiel’s armoured train carriage, the Breaknought, set to make its maiden trip seems the prime target and with a distraction elsewhere Wax manages to slip aboard the carriage unnoticed.
Marasi and Wayne witness the Vanishers at work as a canal boat with a crane lifts the entire car off the tracks and replace it with an exact replica. Working out that Wax is hidden inside the car Miles rips the door from its hinges but is surprised by the booby trap Wax has concealed on the back of the door. Wax manages to escape the warehouse but is confronted by a part koloss Pewterarm Tarson, a Coinshot and a Lurcher. A fight ensues but while Marasi is able to slay the Lurcher, the Coinshot forces them to retreat back into the warehouse.
The following skirmish allows Wax to distract Miles long enough for the constables to arrive and arrest him. Back at the constabulary Wax turns down Marasi and agrees to go ahead with his engagement to Steris, though he feels regretful about Marasi’s feelings.
Miles is executed by the constabulary but Wax tracks down his supposedly dead uncle who turns out to be the mysterious benefactor behind the Vanishers. Edwarn explains that because of the robberies he and his associate purchased the Tekiel’s business, however, Wax has no proof with which to incriminate him and merely assures his uncle that he will kill him one day.
Shortly after the death of Miles Dagouter Marasi follows a strange figure, finally coming face to face with a horrifically deformed figure that turns out to be Ironeyes. He gives her a book to be passed on to Wax and reveals himself as an agent of Harmony. When Wax meets again with Wayne, he shows him the appointment book he lifted from his uncle that contains appointments and notes, promising to do all in his power to stop him.
